Clicked this picture yesterday thinking I'll post it on the blog and ask for suggestions. Suggestions for balancing this little container of coconut shell that I used for planting this beautiful Jade plant. I love little plants in cute little containers around the house. Wish I had more space for all my plants. Most of them are outdoors, a few twigs find their way into small cute containers now and then.
So this coconut shell broke into two unequal halves. The bigger half had the hole which is naturally there for the coconut seed to sprout. I filled soil into the bigger half, planted the Jade in it and placed it into the smaller half so the water that drips from the main container is held by the smaller one. Now the problem was to balance the round bottomed natural container that it was. I placed an old glass bowl under it and kept it in a ceramic wide bowl which is again placed inside a cane basket. Yes, keep counting how many containers and baskets are there :-)
The problem is, I have way too many containers, pots, fruit bowls and baskets for a small home I live in. So I end up placing them one inside the other like this.
The suggestion that I wanted for this coconut container, how do I balance it on a plain surface? Any other ideas than the glass bowl. It does not just look right for a natural container.
Incidentally, this picture was clicked yesterday, that was a Thursday and today I see Bikram's post on containers, the theme for the current Thursday challenge. I wanted to post this picture immediately. And here it is.
Your suggestion is welcome....
we sometimes get stuff in iron, some kind of small rings that we use to place on the gas burner, if the vessel we plan to use has a smaller diameter. than what the normal burner-top would expect. Maybe such rings could be used as they also have a gap in the centre which will balance the coconut shell bottom. On second thoughts you might get earthenware rings at places which cell pottery/matkas etc on the roadside. Just my 2 paisa worth advice :-))
ReplyDeleteThanks Suranga...two paisa is worth millions when you need it :-)
DeleteThat idea of a earthen ring sounds great. I wanted something earthy too. The metallic ring would be quite stable but i'll have to camouflage it somehow. Let's see what i get.
Sangeeta, that metal ring for placing on the burner, is actually a black iron thing, and looks baked. Maybe longer lasting than the earthen thing. You can probably get varieties at places that sell coal sigdi accessories
DeleteHmm.... that is a cast iron ring I guess. That will be great if i can get. Let me look out for that.
Deleteoh wowow .. I like that container awesome :) and that plant I have too :)
ReplyDeleteand so many containers used .. naiceeeeeeeeeeee ...
Bikram's
Very creative container!!
ReplyDeletemake your own balancing ring. take a plastic bangle and start wrapping it with strip of scrap fabric till you get a thick covering all around. give a final covering with a strip of soft polythene (from some good quality shopping bags). this is required as you will use water in the container. secure the ends either by stapling or by sewing with polyester thread. it will be balanced beautifully.
ReplyDeleteOh wow. You reminded me of bangles. I have a few very broad ones and would require little or no wrapping at all.
DeleteThanks. let me do it just now :-)
This look so cute and more it's all natural ..bangle idea by Sayantani is very nice..go for it Sangeeta, in fact any wire which can be easily twisted can be used to balance this..hugs and smiles
ReplyDeleteI used a very broad golden bangle for it and it's looking better. I wanted something where I don't have to work :-)
DeleteHow about making a ring of dried straw, something like the cloth ring women place on their heads to balance their baskets? plait some long straws into a ring and try how it looks!
ReplyDeleteThis would look very earthy, just as I want it. May be some coir rope will be good too. May be i'll use this idea later as this time I wanted an instant solution :-)
DeleteYou can use a ring, and then stick them on a small square wooden stand/platform, nicely polished of course.
ReplyDeleteOr you could use those little stands for flower pots.
Welcome to the blog Ash.
DeleteThis idea of a cubical wooden platform is wonderful. I have a nice stone ash tray which is a nicely carved piece and can be used for this. We don't smoke and the ash tray was just bought for it's beauty and size , I am keeping loose coins in it currently :-)
Thanks.
Nice photo and nice plant. You can use white cement to make a base for the same. And to make it more beautiful paint the white cement. Let me also know if it works.
ReplyDeleteMmmm...you are making me want to play with some clay Swatantra. That's therapeutic for me. :-)
